How does this tip calculator work?

Tip = bill × (percent ÷ 100). Total = bill + optional tax + tip. Per person is the total divided equally by party size, with leftover cents left on the last share so the table still adds up. All of that runs in this browser. We do not store the bill.

Should I tip before tax or after tax?

Default US restaurant habit is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Sales tax is not extra service. The toggle is here because some receipts only show a tax-inclusive total, and some people prefer to tip on that number. Tipping after tax quietly raises the effective percent by your local rate. What tip percent should I use?

For US sit-down service, 18–20% of the pre-tax subtotal is the common modern band. 15% is the older floor. 25% is a thank-you. Haircuts, rides, delivery, and hotel staff are different jobs — use the how-much-to-tip pages for those ranges. Terminals that show 20 / 25 / 30 are a prompt, not a law.

How do I split a bill evenly?

Set party size. We split the final total, not just the tip. This MVP is equal shares only. If three people shared an $80 check plus $16 tip, that is $32 each (with leftover cents called out). Itemized “I only had the salad” lives on a later splitter, not here. The dedicated /split tool is the same math with the tip percent optional.

No. There is no login, no bill photo upload, and no payment. Copy the summary if you want to text it to the table. We are a calculator, not an expense app and not Splitwise.

Accepted Answer

No. Tipping customs vary by country, city, and type of place. Sales-tax math here is arithmetic on the number you typed. It is not a filing, a rate schedule, or a substitute for a state department of revenue. If a house added auto-gratuity, believe the check.
